Official Rules & Match Regulations
Badminton matches use the BWF Rally Point scoring system (Best 2 of 3 games to 21 points). Every rally results in a point regardless of who served. The side winning a rally serves next. At 20-20, the side gaining a 2-point lead wins the game (capped at a maximum of 30 points; 29-29 golden point).
Tournament Formats & Series Types
BWF World Tour events and club opens use Single Elimination draws with seeded positions. Multi-court school opens frequently employ group stages (pools of 4) advancing to knockout quarterfinals.
Seeding Conventions & Byes
In a 16-player draw, Seed 1 is placed at Line 1 and Seed 2 at Line 16. Seeds 3 & 4 are drawn into lines 5 and 12. If 12 players enter a 16-draw, the top 4 seeds receive automatic first-round byes.
Tiebreakers & Overtime Rules
At 20-20, play continues until one side leads by 2 points (e.g. 22-20, 24-22). If the score reaches 29-29, the player or pair scoring the 30th point wins the game.
Schedule 30–35 minutes per match for best-of-3 games. Ensure a minimum 5-minute interval between games and a 60-second interval when the leading score reaches 11 points in any game.
