Official Rules & Match Regulations
Cornhole is played with two boards placed 27 feet apart (front edge to front edge). Teams take turns pitching 4 bags per frame: 3 points for a bag in the hole ("airmail/in the drink") and 1 point for a bag resting on the board. Cancellation scoring is used (e.g., Team A scores 5, Team B scores 2 = Team A earns 3 net points). The first team to reach or exceed 21 points wins.
Tournament Formats & Series Types
Most casual events use Single Elimination or Double Elimination. Competitive ACL tournaments frequently run "Blind Draw" doubles (where players are randomly paired with a partner) followed by double-elimination bracket play.
Seeding Conventions & Byes
For ranked leagues, teams are seeded based on season points. For social tailgates, use our "Random Shuffle" button to randomize matchups instantly. Byes are automatically allocated to top seeds if team counts are not powers of 2 (e.g., in a 6-team draw, Seeds 1 & 2 receive Round 1 byes).
Tiebreakers & Overtime Rules
If both teams reach 21 or tied at 20-20, play continues frame-by-frame until one side wins by 2 or leads at the end of an inning (depending on house rules: exact 21 vs bust to 15 vs straight 21).
Number your physical board sets clearly (Set 1, Set 2, Set 3). Keep extra bags at the registration desk and print our blank bracket sheet for wall tracking.
# Frequently Asked Questions about Cornhole Brackets
Q: How does cancellation scoring work in cornhole?
Points cancel each other out at the end of each 4-bag frame. For example, if Team A scores 6 points and Team B scores 4 points, Team A is awarded 2 points for that round.
Q: Do you have to hit exactly 21 points to win in cornhole?
Under official ACL rules, you do NOT need exactly 21 — the first team to reach or exceed 21 points wins. Some informal house rules require exactly 21 (with penalties for busting over 21).
Q: How many matches are in an 8-team single elimination cornhole bracket?
An 8-team single elimination bracket has 7 total matches: 4 Quarterfinals, 2 Semifinals, and 1 Championship Final.
Q: Can I run a blind draw cornhole tournament with this tool?
Yes! Input your player/team names and click "Random Shuffle" to create randomized, balanced bracket matchups.
