Official Rules & Match Regulations
Standard tennis matches are played Best 2 of 3 advantage sets (or Best of 5 in Men’s Grand Slams). A set is won by the first player to win 6 games with a 2-game margin. At 6-6, a 7-point tiebreak (win by 2) decides the set. For local weekend tournaments, a 10-point match tiebreak is often played in lieu of a full 3rd set.
Tournament Formats & Series Types
Most tennis tournaments use a traditional Single Elimination knockout draw with optional Consolation (Backdraw) for first-match losers. Compass draws and Round Robin boxes are popular for junior developmental and club ladder events.
Seeding Conventions & Byes
In a 16-player draw, Seed #1 is placed on line 1 (top of draw) and Seed #2 on line 16 (bottom of draw). Seeds #3 and #4 are drawn randomly into lines 5 and 12 (opposite quarters). If byes are required (e.g. in a 12-player draw), byes are awarded strictly to Seed #1, #2, #3, and #4.
Tiebreakers & Overtime Rules
Regular set tiebreak: First to 7 points (win by 2), players change ends every 6 points. Match tiebreak (3rd set decider): First to 10 points (win by 2). In round-robin groups, ties are broken by head-to-head, highest percentage of sets won, and highest percentage of games won.
Schedule 60 to 75 minutes per match on hard courts, and 90 minutes on clay. Always publish an Order of Play (OOP) with "Not Before" time stamps to prevent player disputes.
# Frequently Asked Questions about Tennis Brackets
Q: How are seeds placed in a 16 or 32 player tennis draw?
Seed 1 is placed at the top (Line 1), Seed 2 at the bottom (Line 16/32), and Seeds 3 & 4 are drawn into opposing halves so the top seeds cannot meet until the finals or semifinals.
Q: Can I track multi-set scores (e.g. 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5))?
Yes! The score entry input supports complete tennis score strings including tiebreak point notations.
Q: What happens if a player withdraws or retires during a match?
You can record the score up to the retirement point and advance the opposing player as a walkover (W/O) or retirement (Ret).
Q: Can I create a doubles tournament draw?
Yes! Simply enter partner pairings as team names (e.g. "Bryan & Bryan" or "Smith / Jones") in the team list.
Q: Does this generator support consolation backdraws for first-round losers?
Yes, switching to Double Elimination provides a dedicated losers/consolation bracket path for every participant.
